While some of us are born lucky enough to be immune to plant particles and pollen, the vast majority of people will experience the itchy, uncomfortable, sneeze-laden reality of seasonal allergies at some point in their lifetime. But for pet owners, this begs the question: can dogs get allergies too? At Betsy Farms, we’re proud to create premium healthy dog snacks made from natural ingredients to help avoid any negative reactions in your pet. But today, we wanted to shed some light on the truth or falsehood about dogs and allergies.
Allergies & Dogs
The short answer here is yes, dogs can get allergies – but normally, these allergies show up in different ways for dogs than for humans. Most of the time, humans experience sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes when their allergies flare up. Understandably, we tend to look for the same signs in dogs as a sign of allergies. But while dogs can get watery eyes or sneezing due to allergies, these are less common symptoms.
In fact, the most common way that dogs experience allergies is through itchy skin. During the spring, instead of watching for watery eyes or a lot of doggy sneezes, what you should look for is differences in how your dog scratches itself. In particular, an increase in how much your dog scratches its face and ears or licks its paws may be a sign your dog is experiencing seasonal allergies.
Most of the time, allergies are a minor problem that don’t cause a serious impairment to quality of life for your dog. However, if allergies get to be a serious problem or being to cause secondary infections, treatment is possible. If allergies are a major problem for your dog, talk to your vet – they may be able to recommend treatments like allergy shots to help control allergic reactions and keep your pup comfortable year round.
