February 20th marks the unofficial holiday known as, “Love Your Pet Day.” In honor of this holiday we thought we would share with you the top ten reasons why we absolutely love our dogs. So here it is!
They Are a Cure-all to a Stressful Day
I am not sure what helps a stressful day more then coming home to a cute warm face eagerly waiting to greet you. It is a proven fact that petting or playing with a dog can increase levels of the stress-reducing hormone oxytocin and decrease the production of the stress hormone cortisol.
Dogs Just Go With the Flow
Dogs are great at just going with the flow. If you want to spend all day on the couch binge watching season after season of your favorite show, chances are they will too. Want to get outside and enjoy the fresh air? I am sure your dog will be more than happy to tag along.
Need a Good Excuse…Get A Dog
Let’s be honest, there is nothing worse than being stuck somewhere you just really don’t want to be. Whether it’s some weird/awkward date or a late night out on the town, your dog makes an excellent excuse to leave just about any situation. Maybe you have to feed them or let them out because they have been in the house too long. Who can argue with that? Nobody, that’s who!
Teach Us the True Meaning of Forgiveness
We can’t be mad at our dogs for more than ten minutes even if we wanted to. When they have the look of guilt written all over their face, punishing them seems to lead us humans feeling even guiltier!
Dogs Really Are a (Wo)Man’s BFF
A dog’s loyalty knows no bounds. They are always there for us no matter the circumstances and we couldn’t love them enough for that! They love to snuggle, lie on your lap, and give you plenty of attention whenever you need it.
Provide Comedic Relief
We have all heard that laughter is the best medicine. Whether it’s watching countless dog videos or scanning your Instagram for cute puppy pics, our dogs never have trouble making us smile. At home they are constantly doing something crazy or weird that we find entertaining. Whether it’s simply chasing their tail or running around the house like a wild animal, you really can’t help but get a good laugh out of it.
Make the Best Workout Partner
The struggle is real my friends. Daily exercise can be a real pain sometimes but luckily that’s where our dog’s come in. They love to get moving. We really envy them for that, but it looks like we should be thanking them for that too. Generally speaking, a dog needs around 30-60 minutes of exercise a day, which is great for us as well!
Never a Dull Moment
There is nothing better than living with a dog. Watching TV, browsing the internet, reading…those all can get a little boring at times. A dog on the other hand never does.
Great Judge of Character
Ever brought a new person around your dog and they reacted in an unusual way? Chances are it was because your dog was picking up on something that wasn’t quite right. Dogs have very strong senses. This includes their sense of smell and picking up on human cues. The expression, “If your dog doesn’t like someone, you shouldn’t either,” might just ring true.
Help Us Live Longer
Owning a pet could have the potential to add years to your life. There are a number of studies that show owning a dog can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol. What’s more, our pups can also aide in the relief of anxiety and have been known to detect cancer. All of these things can help you live a longer, healthier life. Let’s also not forget all the happiness they bring!
Make sure you give your dog extra treats and hugs on this holiday! Happy Love Your Pet Day!
